The American Census A Social History Second Edition Margo J Anderson 9780300195422 Books Reviews

  • If you're looking for book on the history of the US Census, congratulations. You found it. This book isn't an easy read but it is jam packed with info. The author def did their homework and I learned a lot about the US from this book. The US census has been a important aspect of the development of the US and it's always going to be a prickly issue as the US continues to change. Also, the book is printed on nice paper and is bound well. IMO it's worth the $30.
  • Easy flow, a great read for the history buff or amateur interest!
  • Fantastic book. I was amazed at how much I learned from this.
  • I recently started a consulting engagement with the Census Bureau, and read this book to familiarize myself with my new client. If you're even reading this review, it means you're probably enough of a social science wonk to want to learn the history of the census, and this is the book you want to read. It's mostly focused on the decennial count, giving a decade-by-decade review of its evolution of the methods, questions, controversies, and expansion. It gets into everything from the three-fifths compromise to the debate over sampling versus true counting. And, since everything old is new again, discussion of citizenship questions from way back feel very relevant today. The writing style is adequate, and at times is good about tying together themes, but especially toward the end becomes a little too much of a catalog of recent historical events. Anyway, I'm glad I read it รข€” I'm often bringing up facts that my client didn't even know about their own bureau!
