- As psychological thrillers go, “The Girl from the Sea,†outclasses “Gone Girl†for plot and writing. Unlike “Gone Girl,†the storyline in, “The Girl from the Sea,†is plausible; right to the twisty-ending. The story is a constant guessing-game, from the novel’s opening to closing sentences.
Everyone in this gripping suspenseful tale are flawed; especially the title character. Mia is found unconscious at the edge of the sea. Although her procedural memory (knowing how to do things) is intact, she struggles to regain her explicit memories (knowing her previous life). A young woman with amnesia, she does her best to cope with the possibilities of a future without knowledge of her past. As breadcrumbs of her former life are revealed, the game to regain her memories … her life … are played out to perfection.
“The Girl from the Sea,†is a quick read, with tight and concise writing. Author Shalini Boland, word-paints her character’s surroundings with precise storks, giving just enough description to let readers emerge themselves into her protagonist’s world … at the same time leaving space for their imaginations to run wild with speculation. - The Girl from the Sea is a gripping psychological thriller, which has the reader guessing how the tale will end until the very last line.
Mia is found on the beach, disoriented and not knowing who she is or why she’s on the beach. It’s classified as an accident by the police. She’s finally dismissed from hospital and allowed to go home when her boyfriend recognises her.
But, who is Mia? She doesn’t even recognise her reflection in the mirror. Although there are some disjointed flashbacks, her memory doesn’t improve until the last few chapters, so for most of the novel, Mia is forced to gradually decipher her life with the help of her boyfriend, Jack, from the rowing club she belonged to, neighbours, and her mother and half sister.
Mia soon realises that everyone is lying to her, or using her, for different reasons. And as she tries to piece her life back together, another woman’s body is found, this time in the river, and the police start to link both events. As a result, the action escalates and Mia realises that she’s in danger.
The novel is narrated in the first person, by Mia. I listened to the audio version on audible, and as most of it is written in the present tense, it was like watching a film, because all the actions were vividly portrayed. This gave immediacy and urgency to the narration. The first part is slower than the second part, but the pace is quite steady.
Even after the events are explained and Mia’s memory returns, there are stills twists, the last one is quite shocking. Although the end is distressing, and there are plenty of unlikeable characters, and one quite evil person, it was an enjoyable read. - I was a bit reluctant to start reading this book as it's not really my normal genre but i was soon trapped. Couldn't stop reading until it was finished. An what an unexpected ending! Loved it!
- I just finished reading The Girl from the Sea, and it's going to take a minute to catch my breath. Since I've read a couple of the author's books I was prepared for quite a twist, a good shocker. But I feel like I've been ambushed, punched in the gut!
Growing up as the daughter of a police detective, and now being a writer of suspense, I pride myself on being able to at least vaguely figure out the ending.
Not so much with Shalini. Even if I figure out a little morsel of the truth there's still always a surprise. - What if you wake up on shore one morning and couldn’t remember a thing? You have no idea how you got there, you don’t know your name, what you look like or even who your family and friends are. This is what happened to a young woman, she was told her name is Mia and she was identified by her boyfriend, Piers… he has some photos of them together, so what he’s saying must be true, right? Little by little, she tries to decipher her life based on what she’s told by her boyfriend, her mother and half-sister, a friend named Jack from the rowing club that she belongs to and even a nasty neighbor. She feels a disconnect and soon discovers that the people who are supposed to be the closest to her are all lying to her for different reasons.
“The mind is an incredible thing – it can steer you to madness, or furnish you with comfort.†Is she going mad? Who can she trust? Why does she keep having a reoccurring memory of a woman sneering at her? As a couple of unclear memories begin to surface, she becomes worried that this wasn’t an accident after-all. Then, another body is washed up on shore and now she believes that she may actually be in danger.
I didn’t give this book a full 5 stars only because I didn’t quite sympathize with Mia, I felt like more of her past could’ve been explored as her memories returned.
The plot was slightly predictable but towards the end when the final revelation comes to light… for me, it was completely unexpected. (I love when that happens!)
Besides that, it was fast-paced and an overall enjoyable read! 🙃

- You wake up and find yourself lying on a beach. The problem is you don't know how you got there, who you are or anything about your past. Your prior life is a total blank.
This is the world in which Mia finds herself. The plot in which Mia gradually has flashbacks and doesn't quite know what is real and what isn't seems entirely believable. As her frightening world gradually unfolds and suspense builds the reader is drawn into a plot that is moving in an unexpected direction. You, along with Mia, gradually begin to realize exactly who she really was.
Thoroughly enjoyable, well edited, well written. Good job Shalini. We look forward to more of your novels in the future.
